HENRY AUGUSTUS MORGAN ENTERED INTO REST - DR. HENRY A. MORGAN SUDDENLY SUMMONED TO THE SPIRIT-LAND From a beautiful earthly Sabbath, followed by a night over so lovely, to an eternal Sabbath, where there shall be no night; and from association with congregations that gather and separate at stated periods, to translation to that land "where congregations ne’er bred up," was the happy lot of Dr. Henry A. Morgan, an aged and honored citizen of Suffolk, who was suddenly summoned to the spirit-land on Sunday evening, November 10, 1901, at 7:20 o’clock, his death resulting from an affection of the heart. Dr. Morgan’s health had been falling rapidly since last spring, but he not confined to his house. He rode up town on Saturday afternoon and transacted business, and on Sunday afternoon he paid a visit to his friend and neighbor General L.S. Baker. He desired to attend church at night, and went to his front door to see if the weather would admit of his going out. Upon turning to leave the door he was heard to utter a moan. His loved ones ran to him, and as he sank into a chair he said "I am all right, now;" and indeed he was, for the utterance was given with his last expiring breath, and his spirit passed to the God who gave it, and to engage in whose worship was his last earthly desire. The hour for evening service had arrived and the congregation had assembled at the Main Street church, of which the deceased had been an honored member and office bearer. The pastor was in the home of bereavement, whence an official member proceeded to the church and announced the painful intelligence of Dr. Morgan’s death, and the congregation dispensed. Henry A. Morgan was born in Gates County, N.C., September 9, 1826. At the age of twenty-two he was graduated from the Medical College of Virginia, at Richmond, in a class of thirty two, of which Dr. E.D. Phillips, of Suffolk, is the only survivor. For forty years Dr. Morgan practiced his profession in his native county, but twelve years ago he gave up his arduous duties and removed to Suffolk, where he was a highly-esteemed citizen to the time of his death. He was a gentleman of liberal education and broad mind, a true friend, a hospitable host, a good citizen, a devoted, loving husband and father, and a consistent Christian, having for many years been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The deceased is survived by a widow and one daughter, Miss Lizzie. His other near relatives are a brother and two sisters - Mr. John E. Morgan, of Wiggins’ Cross-Roads, N.C., and Miss Margaret A. Morgan and Mrs. Frank Willey, of Gatesville, N.C. The funeral took place at the Main Street Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends. Rev. R.H. Potts, the pastor, was assisted in the solemn services by Rev. L.E. Barton, of the Baptist Church; Rev. John Stanly Thomas, of the Presbyterian Church; Rev. E.M. Jordan, of the Whaleyville Methodist Church; Rev. A.B. Sharpe, of the East Suffolk Methodist Church, and Rev. Joseph H. Amiss, presiding elder of the Rappahannock district, M.E. Church, South, who was pastor of the deceased about twenty years ago. The interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, the pall-bearers being as follows: Active - Dr. H.W. Campbell, W.E. Hines, J.L. McLemore, R.H. Morgan, R. Edward Norfleet, Junius T. Parker, A. A. Riddick, W.E. Winstead. Honorary - Gen. L.S. Baker, W.W. Ballard, Captain E.B. Britt, Darien P. Daughtrey, Dr. A.W. Eley, E.E.
