(Special to Virginian-Pilot.) Suffolk, Va., Nov. 28. [...] John G. Martin died last midnight at his home, on Broad Street, after a protracted illness with Bright's disease, aged 79 years [sic*. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 o'clock tomorrow from Oakland Christian Church, near Chuckatuck, in which vicinity the decedent formerly lived. The burial will be in the cemetery at St. John's P.E. Church, not far from Chuckatuck. The deceased is survived by a widow, two daughters and two sons. ****************************************************************************** SUFFOLK. Many Matters of Interest Picked Up in and Around Town. Special to The Landmark. Suffolk, Va., November 28. [...] At 11:40 o'clock last night the soul of Mr. John Martin took its flight to its Maker. Mr. Martin had been sick a long time at his home on Broad street, and was a great sufferer from bladder troubles. He was a native of Nansemond county [sic], having lived in the vicinity of Chuckatuck until a few years ago [sic], when he made his home here. He had lived more than the average life of man and died at the advanced age of 79 years. He leaves a wife, five children and fifteen grandchildren to mourn their loss. The funeral will take place at Oakland Christian Church at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon and the interment will be in St. John's Churchyard. John G. F, 9th VA Infantry; the regimental history gives b. August 7, 1824. The 1900 Census - Holy Neck Dist., Nansemond Co. - gives b. August 1822; Owns Mortgaged House, naturalized citizen, immigrated 1858, resident in the US 42 years [sic].
