All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOHN CALVIN NELMS DIED ON YESTERDAY Suffolk, Va., Oct. 5. - John Calvin Nelms, Sr., died today at his home on Hill street, near Institute street. Mr. Nelms was 68 years of age. He had been ill for the past few weeks with a heart affection. The funeral will take place at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon from St. Paul's P.E. church, and the service will be conducted by its rector, Rev. Joseph B. Dunn. The deceased during the Civil War was a brave soldier, and his record is one noted for duty and fearlessness. He was a member of Company A, Sixteenth Virginia Infantry. The following will he the pallbearers: Harvey M. and Frank E. Butler, Dr. H.W. Campbell, J.C. Smith, W.C. Harrell and W.W. Ballard. The Tom Smith Camp, of which the deceased was a member, will serve as honorary pallbearers. The deceased is survived by one daughter, Miss M. Eliza Nelms, and three sons, John Calvin Nelms, Jr., auditor of the Norfolk and Southern Railroad, Norfolk; S. Clyde Nelms of the Norfolk and Western and R.E. Nelms of Portsmouth. Mr. Nelms was an accountant. He was highly regarded by those for whom he worked as well as by his associates in church and camp circles.
