He was a native of Eclipse. He had retired as a quality assurance specialist with Supervisor of Shipbuilding, U.S.N., at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., He was member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. He was a member and past master of Chuckatuck Masonic Lodge 77. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Betty Brothers Newman; three daughters, Anne N. Moody of New Bern, N.C., Elizabeth N. Bailey of Chesapeake and Margaret A. Newman of Washington, D.C.; a son, John S. Newman, Jr. of Carrollton; his mother, A. Mae Newman of Suffolk. Other survivors include two sisters, Alese N. Hazelwood of Suffolk and Andrey N. Clements of Williamsburg; a brother, Everett H. Newman of Suffolk; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted today at 4 p.m. in Ebenezer United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Andrews. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the church’s memorial fund.
