All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS NORFLEET Suffolk, Virginia, November 9 - A gallant veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars, died at 7:15 a.m. Friday, November 9, 1906 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mansfield Batten, at No. 210 Chestnut Street. Though he had been feeble some time, he had been in bed only since last Sunday, November 4, 1906. His death was hastened by an accident some years ago on the Atlantic and Danville Railroad. In getting off a train at Suffolk, he had his foot crushed and some of his toes were amputated. The funeral will take place at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 1906 from the residence of Mansfield Batten. He was the father of Mrs. Mansfield Batten of Suffolk, Mrs. S.A. Sutton of Norfolk, Mrs. Annie Petters of Baltimore, Miss Daisy Norfleet of Suffolk, Miss Jane Norfleet of Norfolk, I.V. Norfleet of Trenton, New Jersey and Linwood Norfleet of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He entered the Mexican War when quite young and followed the Stars and Stripes throughout the conflict. He also fought during the entire Civil War. He was 82 years old in September 1906, was born in Nansemond County and was married twice. Though there are not left enough of his Mexican War comrades within a radius of many miles to form a funeral escort, the remains will be accompanied to the grave by numbers of those who wore Grey. Commander H.E. Smith requests that the Tom Smith Camp of Confederate Veterans assemble at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 1906 in full uniform in front of R.R. Allen’s store on Washington Street in order at attend the funeral in a body. Interment will be in Cedar Hill. The funeral was conducted by Rev. W. Mosby Seay, pastor of the Baptist Church, who was assisted by Rev. Dr. Staley, of the Christian Church. Active pallbearers: Abner Stallings, William H. Howell, R.E. Whitehead, Samuel Walton, J.E. Harrell, Joseph Joyner, M.W. Joyner and C.O. Harrell. A detachment of veterans from the Tom Smith Camp was the honorary escort. There was present at the graveside, no comrade who fought with him in the Mexican War.
