NORFLEET, 77, DIES LAST NIGHT; VETERAN OFFICER - FATALLY STRICKEN RITES TUESDAY FOR WIDELY KNOWN FARMER AND COMMISSIONER Robert Claude Norfleet, 77, one of Nansemond County’s most widely know and prominent citizens, died at his home near Holland last night at 8:30 o’clock. His health had been in a steadily declining state for the past few years. His infirmities forced him to bed ten weeks ago. A large-scale farmer during most of his life, Mr. Norfleet was also active in the political, religious and social affairs of Nansemond County for a half century. He served as Commissioner of the Revenue for Nansemond County 24 years, retiring at the expiration of his sixth successive term on December 31, 1936. Mr. Norfleet was a lifelong worker in his church, Holy Neck Christian Church. He attended 50 annual convention of the Christian Church and served as Collector during 30 years. He taught the men’s Bible Class at Holy Neck, has exercised leadership in all phases of the church activities. Mr. Norfleet was a member of the "mother club" of Ruritan National at Holland. He also was long a member of the Woodman of the World. Surviving Mr. Norfleet are three sons, Elmo J. Norfleet and R. Murray Norfleet of Holland; and Alva L. Norfleet of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Miss Allie Lee Norfleet and Mrs. Claudine Norfleet Harrell, both of Nansemond County; six grandchildren; Roger, Rebecca, Richard and Robert Norfleet; Misses Margaret and Emma Harrell, all of Nansemond County; and one cousin, Mrs. Emma J. Hoggard, of Norfolk; also a number of nieces and nephews including W.A. Daughtrey of this city. Funeral services will be conducted at Holy Neck Christian Church Tuesday at 2:30 P.M. by the Rev. Arnold Slater, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. N.G. Newman, the Rev. J.S. Johnston, and the Rev. W.H. Corbitt. Burial will be in the Whaleyville Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** ROBERT CLAUDE NORFLEET Robert Claude Norfleet, one of the most prominent and best beloved citizens and for 24 years, Commissioner of Revenue of Nansemond County, died at his ancestral home near Holland Sunday night at 8:30. Mr. Norfleet was the son of the late John and Mrs. Margaret Lee Norfleet, an old and prominent family for generations. He was born in the old home in which he died on August 9, 1861, and for years was a prominent farmer. He retired from active services as Commissioner of Revenue several years ago. Mr. Norfleet was a prominent member and senior deacon of Holy Neck Christian Church, and teacher of the Men’s Bible Class; a charter member of the Holland Ruritan Club and a member of the Woodmen of the World. Surviving are three sons, Elmo and Murray Norfleet of Holland, Alva Norfleet of Washington, and Miss Allie Lee Norfleet and Mrs. Emmett Harrell, who made their home with their father, besides the following grandchildren: Roger, Rebecca, Robert and Richard of Holland and Margaret and Emma Harrell of Holland. Among Franklin relatives are Mrs. Hunter Scott, Miss Cora Norfleet, Walter and Linwood Norfleet, Jack and Walter Norfleet, Jr., Lawrence Johnson, Edward Daughtrey, Miss Lydia Daughtrey, Braxton Daughtrey, J.J. Bradshaw and family, Mrs. Nurney Whitley and Joan Whitley, who is a great-great-great niece of the deceased. Mr. Norfleet’s wife, Mrs. Mamie Rogers Norfleet, died in May, 1937.
