All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ SARAH ELIZABETH RIDDICK NORFLEET DEAD AFTER LONG LIFE Suffolk, Va., June 9 - Mrs. Sarah Norfleet died shortly before 7 o’clock this evening at her home, 708 Bank Street. She passed away as one falling asleep. She had been an invalid several years. Mrs. Norfleet was the mother of Mayor John Ballentine Norfleet, his twin brother, Robert J. Norfleet, and three daughters Mrs. W.W. Ballard, Mrs. Kate Brothers, and Miss Bessie Norfleet. She also leaves eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The deceased was a native of Cypress Chapel and her maiden name was Riddick. Her husband Elisha Norfleet, died 41 years ago. Mrs. Norfleet was a charter member of the Suffolk Christian Church in 1860, and she has been helpful to its spiritual welfare for half a century. There are only two charter members left - William T. Duke and James A. Turrentine. Mrs. Norfleet was nearly 77 years. ****************************************************************************** A GOOD WOMAN GONE TO REST Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Norfleet, An Aged Mother in Israel, Well Beloved and Highly Honored, Peacefully Passes to the Great Beyond at 6:45 o’clock Yesterday Evening. Last night at 6:45 o’clock after years of patient suffering, Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Norfleet, widow of Elisha Norfleet, died in the seventy-sixth year of her age. Mrs. Norfleet was a charter member of the Christian Church at the time of its organization in 1860, and has been during this half century of membership, faithful, consistent and helpful, her pure and Christian life a source of strength and uplift to those with whom she was associated. Left a widow many years ago she reared her family of sons and daughters to be men and women of high standing and worth in the community, whose devotion to their mother has been a matter of comment in the town. Mrs. Norfleet was Miss Riddick, a member of an old and prominent Nansemond family. She is survived by her son, Mayor John B. Norfleet and his twin brother Robert J. Norfleet, and by three daughters, Mrs. Kate Brothers, Mrs. Walter W. Ballard, and Miss Bessie Norfleet, who has been her mother’s consistent companion and nurse during her years of invalidism. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
