All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILSON NORFLEET Wilson Norfleet Dies Here After A Long Illness Funeral Service Tomorrow Afternoon at 3 o'clock for One of Suffolk's Oldest and Most Prominently Connected Citizens. Wilson Norfleet, a member of one of the best-known families in this section of the state, died at his residence 120 Wellons Street, yesterday evening at 6 o'clock, after an illness of more than a month. He was 75 years old. He had been in the horse business for more than a half a century before ill health forced his to give up his duties in that line. He held the admiration of many friends and sincere regret has been expressed at his death. Mr. Norfleet was the son of the late N.G. Norfleet and Sophia Anne Riddick. He was the grandson of Edward Norfleet, one of Suffolk's founders and the great-grandson of Captain John Cowper of Revolutionary fame. He was a member of the Suffolk Christian church. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Julia Kerby, four sons, Lemuel H. Norfleet, of Suffolk; Wallace and Alva Norfleet of Norfolk and Robert Norfleet of Washington, D.C. Mr. Norfleet also leaves several nieces and nephews, N.G. Norfleet, Willie and Jack Norfleet, Al Darden and Boney Spratley. Funeral services will be held at the graveside in Cedar Hill Cemetery on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and will be conducted by Dr. W.W. Staley, the Rev. H.S. Hardcastle and the Rev. O.L. Gilliam. The active pallbearers were Archie Brothers, J.T. Freeman, A.M. Butler, W.T. Blackstone, C.E. Hargrave, Jasper Oliver, Hardy Holla, F.A. Holladay. The honorary pallbearers were A.A. Riddick, E.K. Channel, James Butler, A. Woolford, R.H. Morgan, Dr. O.R. Yates, A.G. Darden, E.W. Smith, W.R. Milteer, George Howerton, W.N. McAnge, Sidney Davis, M.C. Nelms, J.A. Cheatham, George W. Skinner, H.C. Barton, H.C. Daughtrey and Dr. W.L. Thompson. ****************************************************************************** Wilson Norfleet, Of Suffolk, Dies Suffolk, Sept. 14. - Wilson Norfleet, aged 76, a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families of this community, and son of the late Nathaniel Norfleet, died here tonight at his home on Wellons street. He is survived by daughter, Mrs. Julia Kirby, four sons Lemuel H. Norfleet, of Suffolk; Wallace and Alva Norfleet, of Norfolk, and Robert Norfleet of Washington, D.C., and a number of grandchildren.
