Oliver, 72, father of Mrs. R.N. Baker, Jr., of Suffolk, died at his home on the Smithfield Road last night at 11:15. He was a farmer, and a native of Nansemond county, he was born January 15, 1870, the son of Alex W. Oliver and Mrs. Mary Lucy Oliver. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Eureka Ashburn Oliver, and the following sons and daughters. Ashburn Oliver, Roanoke; S.C. Oliver, Jr., Wightville, N.C.; Captain R.H. Oliver, War Department, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Louise Oliver Wright, of Nansemond County; Mrs. Glenn C. Wenner, Staunton, Va., Mrs. Harold C. Hart, Washington; Mrs. Harry F. Smith, Roanoke, Va., and Mrs. Baker. Two sisters and a brother also are living. They are Mrs. George Jackson, and Mrs. R.L. Modlin, both of Suffolk. One brother, Andrew J. Oliver, also is living, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. The body was removed to the R.W. Baker and Company Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. tomorrow by Dr. A.L. Franklin, pastor of the Main Street Methodist church, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. ("Suffolk News-Herald," Sep. 27, 1945, p. 8) His father (1843 - 1898) was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. A, 16th VA Infantry.
