Pitt's Widow Succumbs Mrs. Julia Bunch Channel [sic; Channell] Pitt, widow of James H. Pitt, died early this morning at her home near Smithfield after a brief illness. Mrs. Pitt, the daughter, of the late William and Georgianna Moody Channel, was born in 1860 in Isle of Wight County. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Marie Pitt Davis, of Smithfield; one granddaughter, Miss Marie Davis, of Smithfield and Marion College, Marion; four nieces, Mrs. D.R. Scott, of Elizabeth City, N.C., Miss Ruth Goodson, Norfolk, Mrs. Florence M. Now and Mrs. L.O. Nicholson, of Portsmouth, and a nephew, P.H. Mayo, of Portsmouth, Services will be held at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Baker Funeral Home with Rev. J.F. Colston officiating. Burial will be in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Chuckatuck. ****************************************************************************** Conduct Rites For Mrs. Pitt Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Channel [sic; Channell] Pitt, who died Friday at her home near Smithfield, were held at 1 o'clock yesterday at the Baker Funeral Home. Rev. J.F. Colston, pastor of Wesley Chapel, Chuckatuck, officiated. The pall was of red and white carnations and active pallbearers were J.W. Horne, Jr., Jesse Oliver, Ralph Griffin, Leon Chapman, Armistead Whitley and Clyde Brock. Burial was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. C.C.'s widow Margaret Texanna "Maggie Texie" (COFIELD) CHANNELL applied for a pension Feb. 19, 1924, stating he served in the 17th VA Infantry; rather, he served in Co. I, 3rd VA Infantry. He left a will, recorded 10 Apr 1902 (IoW.Co. WB33:643). He & his widow (1851 - 1932) are buried in Whitehead's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery; he had been a deacon of the church.
