POTTER SUCCUMBS TODAY Long in Declining Health, Death Early This Morning Claims One of City's Best-Known Employees and Citizens. Funeral services for Lyman Henry Potter, 37 [sic*], who died at 12:30 o'clock this morning at the Sarah Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, will be conducted Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence, 108 South Broad street, with Dr. W.W. Staley, assisted by Rev. H.S. Hardcastle, officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill cemetery. Mr. Potter had been in failing health for some time, and had been at the Norfolk Hospital since last Saturday. He was one of the most able of the city employees, having been chief clerk to City Manager R.H. Brinkley since 1920. He was regarded highly by his fellowmen and his passing will be a great loss to the city. He was before his employment in the services of the city a member of the American Expeditionary Forces, serving in France with a company of volunteers from this city. He was for a time employed by the Seaboard Air Line Railway. Mr. Potter had not been at his desk in his office in the Municipal building in several months, because of his failing health. All members of the city council and city officials are expected to attend the funeral in a body and members of the American Legion are asked to assemble at the home at 2:45 o'clock to act as honorary pallbearers. The fire bell tolled during the funeral services, and the entire city force will pay respects to their deceased fellowman. He is survived by his wife, one son, Lyman Henry Potter, Jr., his mother, Mrs. Rufus Potter, three sisters, Mrs. Clyde Gurley, Mrs. Courtney Griffin, all of Suffolk, and Mrs. Harry Clarke, of Alger, Ohio, and one brother, Geddes Potter, of Edenton, N.C. ****************************************************************************** Large Attendance At Potter Funeral Rites Funeral services for Lyman Henry Potter, clerk to the city manager of Suffolk, who died recently in a Norfolk hospital, were held yesterday afternoon at the residence on South Broad street by Dr. W.W. Staley, assisted by the Rev. H.S. Hardcastle. Members of Post 57, American Legion, members of Smith's Volunteers of the World War, the city manager, members of the council, and city officials attended in a body. A quartet choir composed of Mrs. Claudia Jacobs, Mrs. Ray Saunders, W.W. Ballard and James Harrell, sang "I Love to Tell the Story" and "Sometime We'll Understand." Active pallbearers were Claude E. Eley, R.H. Brinkley, Herman Jones, William Jones, E.E. Jones, Elmer Brinkley, Thomas Lilliston and W. Taylor Johnson. Burial was in Cedar Hill cemetery. "Taps" was blown at the close of the ceremonies. Members of the legion and of Smith's World War Volunteers attended as honorary pallbearers. Among the out-of-town relatives who came for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Clarke, of Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Geddes Potter, of Edenton, N.C.; Mr. and Mrs. C.C.
