Funeral Friday For John Powell 

  Funeral service for John Arthur Powell, 69, who died yesterday at his home 
on Charles Street, will be conducted tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the graveside in 
Cedar Hill Cemetery by Dr. I.W. Johnson.  The body was taken to the R.W. Baker 
Funeral Home where it will remain until hour of service. 

  Dr. E.C. Joyner, city coroner, who viewed Powell's body about 1:10 o'clock 
yesterday afternoon reported the case as one of "self inflicted death, by 
hanging." 

  Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lillian Boyd [sic; Boyce] Powell; four 
daughters, Mrs. Louis Manos, of Newport News, Mrs. F.A. Baker, Mrs. Earl 
Haynes and Mrs. Randolph Johnson, of this city; a son, James A. Powell, this 
city; two sisters, Mrs. Leroy Pope, of Chuckatuck, and Mrs. Jimmy L. Powell, 
of Franklin: a brother, Rob Powell, of Portsmouth, and six grandchildren. 

  For many years Mr. Powell drove a taxi in this city.  He retired nine years 
ago because of ill health.
