John Powell 

  John Henry Powell, retired Clerk of the Circuit Court of Nansemond County, 
died Wednesday.  He was 77. 

  Powell, a native of Nansemond County, was the son of Paul J. and Sallie 
Simons Powell.  He received his Juris Doctor degree from the T.C. Williams 
School of Law of the University of Richmond and was admitted to the Virginia 
Bar.  He practiced law a short while in Suffolk before he was appointed Clerk 
of the Circuit Court in 1930, and served for 43 years before retirement in 
1973.  He was also clerk of Nansemond County and ex-officio clerk of the 
County's Board of Supervisors. 

  Throughout his career he was active in the Democratic Party in Virginia, as 
well as many local church and civic organizations.  In 1942 he was President 
of the Ruritan National and served on its Board of Directors for a number of 
years.  From 1966 to 1970 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the 
Virginia School at Hampton for the Deaf and Blind. 

  He was a member of Holland Christian Church, where he served on its Board of 
Deacons.  He was formerly a member of Western Branch Baptist Church. 

  He is survived by his wife, Eleanor McClung Powell; two daughters, Eleanor 
P. Darden of Richmond and Jean P. Hobbs of Annapolis, Md.; two sons, John 
Henry Powell Jr. of Raleigh, N.C. and Paul Hunter Powell of Annapolis; one 
sister, Margaret P. Armstrong of Cranston, Rhode Island. 

  A service will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the Holland Christian Church 
and burial will be at Holly Lawn Cemetery in Suffolk. 

  Memorial donations may be made to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad or the 
Holland Christian Church.  The family will be at his home.

   John Henry Powell, 77, died Wednesday.  He was a native of Nansemond Co. 
He was a graduate of T.C. Williams School of Law of University of Richmond. 
In 1930 he was appointed Clerk of the Circuit Court of Nansemond where he 
served for 43 years until his retirement in 1973.  In 1943 he was President 
of Ruritan National and he was a member of Holland Christian Church where he 
served on the Board of Deacons.  Survivors include his wife, Eleanor McClung 
Powell; two daughters, Eleanor P. Darden, of Richmond, and Jean P. Hobbs, of 
Annapolis, MD.; two sons, John Henry Powell, Jr., of Raleigh, N.C. and Paul 
Hunter Powell, of Richmond; one sister, Margaret P. Armstrong, of Cranston, 
RI; one granddaughter.  Funeral services will be conducted Friday (today) at 
2:00 p.m. in the Holland Christian Church by the Rev. David Seymour with 
burial in Holly Long [sic; Lawn] Cemetery, Suffolk.  Memorial donations may 
be made to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad or the Holland Christian Church.
