JOHN HENRY POWELL

   John Henry Powell, 77, died Wednesday.  He was a native of Nansemond Co. 
He was a graduate of T.C. Williams School of Law of University of Richmond. 
In 1930 he was appointed Clerk of the Circuit Court of Nansemond where he 
served for 43 years until his retirement in 1973.  In 1943 he was President 
of Ruritan National and he was a member of Holland Christian Church where he 
served on the Board of Deacons.  Survivors include his wife, Eleanor McClung 
Powell; two daughters, Eleanor P. Darden, of Richmond and Jean P. Hobbs, of 
Annapolis, MD.; two sons, John Henry Powell, Jr., of Raleigh, N.C. and Paul 
Hunter Powell, of Richmond; one sister Margaret P. Armstrong, of Cranston, RI; 
one granddaughter.  Funeral services will be conducted Friday (today) at 2:00 
p.m. in the Holland Christian Church by the Rev. David Seymour with burial in 
Holly Long [Lawn] Cemetery, Suffolk.  Memorial donations may be made to the 
Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad or the Holland Christian Church.  R.W. Baker & 
Co. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
