Was Prominent in Civic Affairs. WINDSOR CHURCH MEMBER Buried At Western Branch Baptist Church Saturday Afternnon At 3 O'Clock. Two Pastors Officiate. John Henry Powell, 72, one of the outstanding citizens of Nansemond County and for many years a merchant and postmaster at Myrtle, died suddenly Friday morning at 10 o'clock in the storage room of his store. Mr. Powell made up the mail as usual and when the clerk returned with incoming mail bag, he failed to find the proprietor. Mrs. Powell was called and after a search, Mr. Powell was found, dead in the warehouse. A heart attack was blamed. Mr. Powell, a son of the late James and Sarah Powell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carrie Eley Powell; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Norman B. Herrin, of Suffolk; two brothers, Robert and Allan Powell, of Newport News; a sister, Mrs. J. Edward Johnson, of Portsmouth, and a number of nieces and nephews, among them John Henry Powell, his namesake, clerk of the Court of Nansemond County. He was a member of Windsor Baptist Church and of its board of deacons. He was also active in the various community services. Funeral services were conducted at Western Branch Baptist Church, Saturday afternoon at 3 P.M. by the Rev. W.V. Carroll and Dr. J. Sydney Cobb. Burial was in the church cemetery.
