POWELL SERVICES FOR COUNTY COURT CLERK WILL BE HELD SATURDAY Suffolk, Va., Sept 12 - Funeral services of Paul J. Powell, clerk of Nansemond county and one of the most popular and beloved residents of this section, who died yesterday at his home near Myrtle, will be held at Western Branch Baptist Church tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o’clock and will be conducted by Rev. J. Sidney Cobb, assisted by Rev. E.T. Clarke and Rev. A.W.H. Jones. Mr. Powell, who was 54 years of age, had been in ill health for several months and had been under treatment in Richmond, but failing to respond had returned to his home in Nansemond County, leaving his son, John Henry Powell, as acting county clerk. He was prominent in political, social and church circles in the county and held office as secretary of the Nansemond County Democratic executive committee, as commissioner of revenue for Nansemond County for 12 years and superintendent of the Department of Agriculture of the Four County Fair for eight years. Mr. Powell was a member of Chuckatuck Lodge, A.F. and A.M., and was a deacon in Western Branch Baptist Church, treasurer of the church and teacher in the Sunday School. His genial manner and uniform courtesy and kindness to everyone with whom he came in contact made friends for him in every walk in life. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sallie Simons Powell; a son, John Henry Powell; a daughter, Miss Margaret Powell; one sister, Mrs. Sallie Johnson, of Portsmouth; three brothers, John H. Powell, of Myrtle, and Robert J. and E. Allen Powell, of Newport News. He was son of the H.J. and Sarah Powell and was born in Isle of Wight County, but spent practically all of his life in Nansemond. Burial will be in the church cemetery. "Suffolk (VA) News-Herald," Vol. 8, No. 91, Tues., July 8, 1930, p. 1 PAUL J. POWELL CONTINUES ILL Prominent Citizen And Clerk Of Nansemond Court Operated Upon Yesterday In Richmond. The condition of Paul J. Powell, clerk of Nansemond County Circuit Court, and prominent citizen of the county lies critically ill at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Richmond. Mr. Powell underwent an operation yesterday and it is reported from the hospital this morning that he is resting as well as could be expected. His son John Henry Powell and daughter Margaret Powell are at his bedside. Mr. Powell recently went to Elkins, Virginia, for his health but failing to regain his strength returned to his home at Myrtle. His condition grew worse and the attending physician recommended that he go to a hospital for a more thorough diagnosis of his case.
