Powell, Sr., 83, of 200 Lenore Trail, Red Oak Colony, died in a Norfolk hospital Thursday at 1 a.m. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Theo Smith Powell. A native of Nansemond County, he lived in this area all his life. He was a son of Jethro and Mrs. Sarah Smith Powell. He was retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard and formerly was superintendent of Washington District Mosquito Control Commission. He was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church, Suffolk, Woodmen of the World, and Machinists Local of Portsmouth. Surviving are a son, Stanley B. Powell Jr., a grandson, Stanley B. Powell III, and granddaughter, Mrs. Joyce P. Tillett, all of Chesapeake; and two great grandchildren. The body was taken to Francis A. Gay Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Bethlehem Christian Church, Suffolk, by the Rev. Carroll Lewis, Dr. R.E. Brittle, and the Rev. Arthur Seabury. Burial will be in Bethlehem Church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to service.
