John F. Carroll, pastor of Magnolia Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Phelps, 80, died yesterday at 2:05 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.F. Green, 1062 East Pinner Street, after an illness of three months. A native of Washington County, N.C., she was the widow of John Wilson Phelps and a daughter of Henderson McDuffy Leary and Mrs. Malissa Davenport Leary of Washington County. She was a member of Beasley Christian Church, Beasley, N.C. Besides her daughter, surviving are two sons, Rhea C. Phelps Sr., and Grady W. Phelps of Nansemond County; one brother, Luther A. Leary of Plymouth, N.C.; one half sister, Mrs. Chester L. Dunlow of Winton, N.C.; two half brothers, Mack Leary and Richard Leary of Aulander, N.C; and seven grandchildren. He was a Federal veteran, having served in Co. L, 1st NC Infantry. He applied for a pension 11 Aug 1890. Her mother (1850 - 1888) is buried in the Albridgston HASSELL family cemetery, Skinnersville, Washington Co., NC. Her step-mother "Sadie" Sarah Isabella Ann (CLIFTON) LEARY (1870 - 1954) 2m. John William MITCHELL in 1922. She is buried in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor, Bertie Co., NC. Se applied for a pension 24 Jul 1920.
