PHILLIPS DIES IN NORFOLK Suffolk's Pioneer Physician Succumbs To Long Illness Suffolk, May 31. - Dr. John Edwin Phillips, Suffolk's pioneer physician and one of the best loved and most prominent medical men in this section, died this morning at Protestant hospital, Norfolk, after many months' feeble health. Dr. Phillips was a native of Isle of Wight county, and was the son of the late Dr. John Phillips of that county, who was in his day one of the most widely known doctors of this section. Dr. Phillips practiced medicine in Suffolk since the late 80's and was a type of the family physicians who served one generation after another. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Lucy Walker, and the second wife, who died some years ago, Miss Eliza Causey, of this city. He is survived by two sons, John Temple Phillips and William Causey Phillips and two grandchildren, John Temple Phillips, Jr., and Virginia Curtis Phillips; three sisters, Miss Carrie Phillips, and Mrs. George Seymour, of New York, and Mrs. Charles Vick, of Kinston, N.C.; three brothers, Jackson Phillips and Percy Phillips, of Suffolk, and Jasper J. Phillips, of Jackson, Miss. Besides these near relatives, Dr. Phillips is survived by a large number of cousins and other kinspeople in Nansemond, Isle of Wight and Southampton counties. He was in his 64th year at the time of his death. He was a member of the Southside Medical Society, and of other medical societies, and had been for years a member of the official board of the Main Street M.E. church, to whose interests he was devoted. He kept his interest in local and national affairs until the week of his death, and watched the progress of the great war with a keen enthusiasm, having in this war a young son, William Phillips, a member of the Rainbow division. He was also a member of the staff of the Virginia hospital of this city. The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the Main Street M.E. church and will be conducted by Rev. J. Arthur Winn. ****************************************************************************** DR. JOHN EDWIN PHILLIPS SUFFOLK, June 1 - The funeral services of the late Dr. John Edwin Phillips, who died yesterday at the Protestant hospital, were held this afternoon in the presence of a great congregation of friends and relatives at the Main Street M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. J. Arthur Winn, assisted by Rev. J.F. Coleman. The pallbearers were all members of the family of the deceased; Eugene and A.H. Hargrave, C.C. Phillips, Sidney Ellis, James R. Jordan, T.B. Wright, Dr. P.P. Causey, Dr. E.F. Corbell. Appropriate hymns were rendered by the choir of the Main Street M.E. church. Interment was made in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
