Phelps, aged 82, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.M. Collins, Coley Avenue, Norfolk, Thursday at 8:20 p.m., after an illness of several weeks. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Katie L. Phelps, three daughters, and five sons: Mrs. C.R. Mason, of Edenton, N.C., Mrs. J.M. Collins, of Norfolk, Mrs. L.A. Harmon, of Aulander, N.C., F.G. Phelps, of Whittaker, N.C., W.G. Phelps, of Ahoskie, N.C., Jesse L. Phelps and C.C. Phelps, of Suffolk, and T.R. Phelps, of Portsmouth. Also twenty-five grandchildren. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home of I.O. Hill and Company Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, for Bethlehem Christian church, where funeral services will be held at the grave at 3 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. R.E. Brittle. ****************************************************************************** MORTUARY J. R. PHELPS Funeral rites were held Saturday at the grave at Bethlehem Christian church for the late J.R. Phelps, conducted by the R.E. Brittle, the pastor, and the Rev. Mr. Wilburn of Norfolk. The choir sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Abide With Me" and "More About Jesus." Following acted as active pallbearers: J.M. Ashley, W.C. Austin, Ernest Oliver, W.D. Austin, J.S. Holland, L.R. Goodman, P.B. Boone and Roland Holland. Friends of the family were honorary pallbearers. CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for the many acts of kindness shown us during our recent bereavement and death of our dear husband and father, Jesse Rubin Phelps, for the many beautiful floral offerings and to those who loaned their cars or helped in any way to comfort us, in our time of grief.
