The deceased was manager and part owner in the firm of Phillips and Sons, commission merchants. He was a son of Col. J.J. Phillips, and a cousin to Dr. John F. Phillips, of this place. His body was due to arrive on the "cannon ball" at 10:39, but on account of the train from New York being late and missing connection with the "cannon ball" at Richmond, a special train had to be chartered. Immediately upon the arrival at Suffolk the body was carried to Cedar Hill cemetery, where the burial service was read by the Rev. Joseph R. Dunn, Rector of St. Paul’s P.E. church. The pallbearers were: Dr. J.E. Phillips, Jackson Phillips, Dr. E.B. Corbell, W. Walter Eley, Corbell Cotton, J.P. Jordan, T.B. Wright and William F. Cotton.
