Born Feb. 2, 1919, in Suffolk, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Thomas and Mamie Bell Jones Boyce. Mrs. Piland was predeceased by her son, Stephen Martin Piland Sr., and brothers, Dan Boyce and Curtis Boyce. She was a member of First Baptist Church and retired from Obici Hospital as a licensed practical nurse. Survivors include her husband, Jethro Haslett Piland; sons, Dr. Jethro H. Piland, Jr. of Mechanicsville and Dean Piland of Suffolk; sister, Vivian B. Willoughby of Suffolk; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. David Chauncey and the Rev. Herschel Hill. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O.
