Thera Omar Palmer Jr., 82, of 230 Terrace Ct., died April 3, 1989, in Portsmouth Naval Hospital. A native of Portsmouth. He had retired as an Army major. He was a veteran of World War II, and had been awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He had also retired as the area director for the Veterans Administration after 28 years of service. He was a 1930 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he was a member of the James L. McLemore Bible Class. He was a member of the Suffolk Elks Lodge 685, and the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife, Margery Morgan Palmer; two sons, Thera Omar Palmer III of Suffolk and Jack Riddick Palmer of Portsmouth; a sister, Ann P. Runnolds of Virginia Beach; a brother, John C. Palmer of Pocomoke City, Md.; and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. David B. Lewis. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church or the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad.
