Philhower Dies After Fall From Ladder Funeral Services For Prominent Resident Here Will Be Held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Residence Funeral services for James B. Philhower, 82, who died late yesterday from injuries sustained in a fall from a ladder, will be conducted at the residence, 310 Cedar street, Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Rev. Dr. John G. Truitt, pastor of Suffolk Christian church will conduct the rites. HAD CLIMBED LADDER Mr. Philhower, a retired lumber manufacturer, climbed a ladder to the second story of his home just before noon to inspect the work of a carpenter and make measurements for a back porch. Losing his balance, the aged man fell approximately 15 feet to the ground. He suffered a fracture of the chest bone which proved fatal. He died at Virginia hospital at 4 p.m. A native of Huntingdon county, N.J., Mr. Philhower moved to Nansemond county as a youngster with his parents following the War Between the States. He was a son of the late Jacob Philhower and Mrs. Sarah B. Philhower, now 102 years old. His mother resides at Wilmington, Delaware, with a daughter. Surviving Mr. Philhower in addition to his mother, are two daughters, Mrs. R.J. Brinkley and Mrs. B.F. Culpepper, Suffolk; two sons, J.C. Philhower, Portsmouth [and J.E. Philhower, Nansemond county]; eight [grand]children and a number of nieces and children, and a number of nieces nephews; a sister, Mrs. Arthur MacAllister, Wilmington, Delaware, and four brothers, E.S. Philhower, Norfolk; R.P. Philhower, Suffolk, G.S. Philhower, Magnolia, and L.H. Philhower, Wilmington, Delaware. HEADED LUMBER FIRM Among the surviving grandsons of Mr. Philhower is J. Frank Culpepper, who is a candidate for sheriff of Nansemond county in the Democratic primary being held today. During his active business career Mr. Philhower was head of the lumber firm of J.B. Philhower & Son. ****************************************************************************** JAMES B. PHILHOWER Suffolk, Aug. 7 - Funeral services for James B. Philhower, prominent lumber manufacturer, who died Monday, following a fall at his home on Cedar Street, were held this afternoon at the residence on Cedar Street, conducted by the Rev. John G. Truitt, pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church. A quartette choir, composed of W.W. Ballard, Hersey Woodward, Mrs. Gladys Morgan and Mrs. Randolph Chapman, accompanied by W.T. Myrick, sang, "Asleep in Jesus" and "The Christian’s Goodnight." The casket was covered with a pall of Easter lilies and white asters. Active pallbearers were grandsons, sons-in-law and grandsons-in-law of the deceased, J. Frankl Culpeper, Allen Sullivan, Wallace Walton and B.F. Culpeper. Friends of the family served as honorary pallbearers. Burial was made in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
