All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Former County Resident Dead Jacob Edward Philhower, 62, a former Nansemond County resident, of Princess Anne Road, Norfolk, died Monday at 11 a.m. in the U.S. Marine Hospital, Norfolk, after a long illness. He was the son of the late James B. and Georgie Rawls Philhower, of Nansemond County. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John Seratelli, of New Jersey; one son, Cole Philhower, also of New Jersey; two sisters, Mrs. R.J. Brinkley, of Suffolk, and Mrs. B.F. Culpepper, of Ocean View; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the I.O. Hill Funeral Home, where it will remain until Wednesday at 2:15 p.m., at which time the funeral procession will leave for Cedar Hill Cemetery for graveside services at 2:30 p.m., to be conducted by Dr. H.S. Hardcastle. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. His WW-II draft card gives Jacob Edwin, b. 26 May 1892. His sister Ava (PHILHOWER; Mrs. Robert Jackson) BRINKLEY applied for a military headstone for Jacob 26 Mar 1952. Birthdate 26 May 1889 was altered to 26 May 1890, but the stone shows May 26, 1889. He was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment, but was released by 1942. Jake was shot [grazed] in the head and badly cut during a robbery of the filling station, 10 Mar 1936. He & Doris identified the assailants 16 Mar 1936 in Portsmouth.
