Philhower, who celebrated her 102nd birthday on April 1, died at the home of her daughter at Wilmington, Del., today. A resident of Nansemond county for more than a half-century, Mrs. Philhower has lived at Wilmington for the past 20 years. HAD 100th PARTY On the occasion of her one hundreth birthday two years ago, her four sons in Virginia attended the birthday party in Delaware. Mrs. Philhower's death was believed due, in addition to , her advanced age, to grief over the death this month of two of her five sons. James B. Philhower, 82, of Suffolk, eldest of her sons, died August 5 from injuries sustained when he fell from a ladder while taking measurements for a second- story addition to his Cedar street residence. Luther Philhower, of Wilmington, a cripple and constant companion of his mother, died two weeks ago. MARRIED AFTER WAR [sic*] Born in Hunterdon county, New Jersey, April 1, 1833, the centenarian was married just after the Civil War to Jacob Philhower and the couple came south, settling at Magnolia, Nansemond county, where they became well-to-do farmers. Surviving Mrs. Philhower, are her only daughter, Mrs. Mary Ella McAllister, Wilmington, Del., and three sons, George S. Philhower, Magnolia; R.P. Philhower, Suffolk, and E.S. Philhower, Norfolk. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. J. Frank Culpepper, sheriff-elect of Nansemond county, is a great- grandchild, as is Mrs. Wallace H. Walton and James Philhower, Jr. Funeral services will be held at Wilmington Monday, after which the body will be conveyed to Suffolk for burial in the family plot at Cedar Hill cemetery.
