A native of Suffolk, he was the son of the late Charles B. and Clara Outland Pond. Mr. Pond was the president of Producer Peanut Co. Inc. He was a member of West End Baptist Church, the Peanut and Treenut Processor Association, the Great Bridge Power Squadron and the Nansemond Power Squadron. Survivors include his daughter, Catherine P. Lawson and husband George of Midlothian, Va.; son, James R. Pond, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Chesapeake; brother, Richard L. Pond Sr. of Suffolk; three grandchildren, George H. Lawson, III, Edwin K. Lawson and Jennie K. Pond; and devoted friend, Mary Ellen Gomer. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in West End Baptist Church by the Rev. T. Floyd Irby and Dr. Donald J. Dunlap. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
