All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ HENRY MacRAE PINNER HENRY MacRAE PINNER, 78, DEVELOPER, CHURCH LEADER SUFFOLK - Henry MacRae Pinner, 78, retired merchant, farmer, land developer and civic and church leader, died late Monday in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital. A native of Nansemond County, he was a son of Millard Fillmore and Mrs. Mary MacRae Pinner and the husband of Mrs. Lucy Ellen Woodland Pinner, formerly of Baltimore. He was educated in private schools of Suffolk and Bingham School, Asheville, N.C. He was engaged in the seed, fertilizer and produce business in Suffolk until 1929 when he devoted his entire time to extensive farming interests and a chick hatchery. These were sold in the mid-1950’s along with real estate holdings which included Eastover and Northgate subdivisions. He later bought an interest in Ramsey Lumber Co. and was its secretary and treasurer until 1962, when he sold his holdings He was a past president of the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, Community Chest, and Old Dominion Area Boy Scout Council. For 35 years he was a member of the council executive board, and held the Silver Beaver award. He was chairman of both the Suffolk and Nansemond County Planning commissions, and was county representative to the Regional Planning Commission and the Tidewater Virginia Development Corporation. He was a past president of the Suffolk Rotary Club and a member since 1923. He also headed the Virginia Camellia Society, and was named First Citizen of Suffolk and Nansemond County in 1958. He was a teacher, superintendent, and president of the Men’s Bible Class of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He was church treasurer 27 years and a vestryman 35 years, and had several terms as warden. He had been chairman of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Southern Virginia, an honor seldom bestowed on laymen, and for many years was on the Diocesan executive board. He was on the official board of Historic Old St. Luke’s Church, and was active in its restoration. Besides his widow, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Lee G. Sannelle of Providence, R.I.; a brother, Donald G. Pinner of Suffolk; and a sister, Mrs. Jean Pinner Rawls, of Suffolk. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. James H. Newsom Jr. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave R.W. Baker & Co.
