PARKER PASSES AWAY Another old Confederate has answered the roll call. Captain George T. Parker, after a long illness and patient suffering, passed to his reward on Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock at his home on Pinner Street, age 74 years. Several years ago he was stricken with paralysis and gradually his strength failed him, until on Saturday he went to sleep like a tired child and never aroused, peacefully "falling on sleep" on Wednesday to awaken in the city of "Pure delight where saints immortal reign". Captain Parker was a true, brave and loyal Confederate soldier, serving as Captain of Co. H, Fifth North Carolina Regiment. He served as Commander of Tom Smith Camp C.V., and when in health always attended its meetings and took a lively interest in the Camp and was greatly beloved by its members. At one time he commanded the Suffolk Grays. A consistent and faithful member of Main Street Methodist Church, he was always found at his post of duty in the choir and the other activities of his church, taking great interest in all things which pertained to the moral and spiritual uplift of the community. He was broad and magnanimous in spirit and rejoiced in the prosperity of others. He was a brave soldier, a good husband and father, a true citizen and a devout Christian gentleman. Freed from his rundown house of clay, he lives in a glorious body in the "house of many mansions". He served his day and generation well land has gone to reap the reward - the crown of rejoicing and the presence of his God forever." Captain George Thomas PARKER, former lawyer & justice, Confederate veteran, NC native, d. 18 Jan 1911, at home, Suffolk, age 74, interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery (Block C, Lot 66), Suffolk, donated obit, publication unknown *Cedar Hill list, an extension of the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/cemeteries/cedar_p.txt He sued Western Union for failing to promptly notify him of the illness of his son Herbert, who died 4 Sep 1898, at Camp Cuba Libre, Jacksonville, FL. Justice PARKER was unable to collect damages for mental anguish, but won $25 to offset the extra expenses caused by the delay. An article on the ruling ("Virginian-Pilot," Oct. 11, 1899, p. 7) is posted with those on Herbert's death, posted at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/obits/p626h5ob.txt Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by Mrs. Bruce Saunders (bs4403@verizon.net), and re-formatted by File Manager. file at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/obits/p626g1ob.txt
