L. Rhodes Fell Face Forward in Fire While Parents Were Shopping - May Cause Her Death Suffolk, Va., March 11 - (Special.) - "Your child is burned, but only slightly. They want you at home. Don't get excited, for it doesn't amount to much." Thus spoke W.M. Atkinson, a livery stable owner, today to J.L. Rhodes, of Chuckatuck, Va. Mr. Atkinson had had a 'phone message from Mrs. Butts, wife of Dr. G.W. Butts, asking him to notify Mr. Rhodes or his wife, both of whom were in Suffolk. The telephone said the child was burned quite seriously, but Mr. Atkinson broke the news gently. Even at that the couple got worked up about the news, and hurrying after packages for which they had come, hastened to their carriage, which was at Mr. Atkinson's stables. Both were nervous when they left town. A special from Chuckatuck received at this office tonight says the accident was serious. The child, a girl, was sitting before a fire. A brother, older than she, had playfully pushed her chair over and the girl's face fell into the fire. It was badly burned. The wire says the child may recover. She may live from the effects of the fire wounds, but the shock may prove fatal. The chances are the child will recover, but possibly may lose an eye. "I told my wife she had no need to come to town today," said Mr. Rhodes. "We left the child with a colored girl and we thought she would care for it." ****************************************************************************** Died of Her Burns. The young child of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Rhodes of Chuckatuck, whose dire hurts were told of in this newspaper on Sunday died late Saturday night. The infant, which was a girl, suffered great agony before death came as a relief. The child, whose parents had driven to Suffolk, was left in charge of a colored nurse, who strapped her into a rocking chair which for comfort's sake was placed before an open fire. In some way the chair was overturned and she was precipitated head first into the burning coals. The cords and the chair's weight held her face to the coals until she was fatally scorched. infant RHODES, daughter of Jacob L. & Cora (LEWIS) RHODES, fatally burned 11 Mar 1905, Chuckatuck, "Virginian-Pilot" (Norfolk, VA), Vol. 24, No. 61, Sun., Mar. 12, 1905, p. 10; "Virginian-Pilot" (Norfolk, VA), Vol. 24, No. 62, Tues., Mar. 14, 1905, p. 6 The articles were reprinted in the "Norfolk Journal of Commerce and Twice-a-Week Virginian-Pilot," Vol. 3, No. 125, Tues., Mar. 14, 1905, p. 3. *Additional information: Her parents are buried in Newman Memorial Cemetery, Oakland Christian Church, Chuckatuck.
