[...] It is with deepest regret that we announce the death of Capt. Jethro Riddick, one of the best known, most prominent and useful citizens of the County of Nansemond. He died of apoplexy on Saturday morning last. He arose in the morning as usual, and went to his barn, and was feeding a corn sheller, while a servant was turning the crank, when suddenly he fell backward and expired, before any of the family reached him. A large number of persons were present on Monday last at his funeral, thus testifying their respect for him. His large family, the community, and the Christian church, all sustain a great loss in his death. [...] OBITUARY. Died suddenly of apoplexy, at his residence, near Cypress Chapel, in Nansemond county, on the morning of the 17th inst., Capt. JETHRO RIDDICK, in the 71st year of his age. The death of this exellent citizen, has brought deep grief to a large family of children, grandchildren, relatives and friends in large numbers, but more than any his bosom companion, who had lived with him for nearly fifty years, feels her loss. He had been for twenty-five years a prominent member of the Christian church at Cypress Chapel. His hospitality was unbounded, and his loss to the church, to his family, and to the community will be irreparable. But he died prepared. He lived in readiness to depart. Sweet be his rest. Capt.
