All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ LOUISIANA SUMNER RIDDICK SUFFOLK'S OLDEST CITIZEN SUCCUMBS AT AGE NINETY-SIX MISS LOUISIANA SUMNER RIDDICK DIES SUDDENLY LAST NIGHT IN THE HOME ON BANK STREET WHERE SHE WAS BORN IN 1840 Suffolk's oldest citizen, Miss Louisiana Sumner Riddick, died suddenly last night at her home on North Main Street, in the house in which she was born. She had attained the age of 96 years. Funeral services will be conducted at Main Street Methodist Church by the Rev. George Wesley Jones, D.D., Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Burial will be in Cedar Hill cemetery. Miss Riddick, born March 21, 1840, was the daughter of Benjamin Riddick, one of Suffolk's early mayors, and Mrs. Eliza P. Riddick. At the death of her parents she made her home with her nieces at the family residence. She was a member of Main Street Methodist Church for 80 years, and in her latter days, often sang church hymns she had memorized when a girl. Surviving are four nieces, Mrs. W.T. Myrick, Miss Ellen Riddick, Misses Louise and Dora Britt; three nephews, Luther R. Britt, of Norfolk, Benjamin R. Britt, of Clarksburg, West Va., and Henry S. Eley, of Suffolk. Also six great nephews, Seth and Dr. T. Wood Campbell and W.T. Myrick, of Suffolk, Ben R. Britt, Jr., of Clarksburg, West Va., Dr. R. Cannon Eley, of Boston, Mass., and E. Britt Myrick, of Louisville, Ky. Three great nieces, Miss Margaret Britt, of Norfolk, Miss Emily Campbell, of Suffolk, and Mrs. Paul Van Valkenburg, of East Orange, N.J., and the following great, great nephew and nieces: Frederick Eley, of Boston, Wood Van Valkenburg, of East Orange, N.J., Ruth Anne, Grace and Frances Myrick, of Clarksburg, West Va., and Brandon Markley, of Norfolk.
