Robert Riddick, only son of Richard H. Riddick, at the early age of thirty seven, died at the Crawford House in Portsmouth, Virginia, December 25th, 1866, after a short illness of ten days. The deceased entered the army early in 1861, at the call of his mother State, Virginia, as a private in the 13th Virginia regiment Cavalry, leaving his home in Mississippi for that purpose, and remained faithful to his post until the surrender of General Lee. He was universally beloved for his many social and manly qualities. As a soldier, messmate and companion, he had few equals; generous to a fault, slow to anger, but jealous of his honor when injury was intended. The writer has been his comrade and messmate in field and camp, and his associate in the private walks of life, in every position has found him worthy and possessed the love of all who knew him; an affectionate son to his aged parents, a devoted brother to his affectionate sister, who doted on his love. May Heaven have mercy repentant soul. None having known him but what loved him.
