RAWLES SR., 88, DIES AT HIS HOME HERE Dr. Benjamin Watkins Rawles Sr., 88, a practicing physician in Richmond for 60 years, died Wednesday at his home in the Tuckahoe Apartments where he had lived for several years. He had been ill for several weeks. He began his general medical practice in Richmond in 1898. Not until several weeks ago when he became ill did he stop practicing. A funeral service and burial will be held Friday, but the hour and other arrangements were incomplete last night. The family requested that flowers be omitted. Surviving Dr. Rawles are his wife, the former Miss Sarah Anne White of Richmond; four sons, Dr. Benjamin W. Rawles, Jr., James W. Rawles and Robert B. Rawles, all of Richmond, John G. Rawles of Morristown, N.J.; a daughter, Mrs. Allen C. Goolsby Jr. of Richmond, and 10 grandchildren. He was born at Box Elder, Nansemond County, in 1870, and was a son of the late Elisha Rawles and Mary Watkins Rawles. He was educated in Nansemond County schools, Bethel Military Academy, and the Medical College of Virginia, where he received an M.D. degree in 1897. After interning at the Old Dominion Hospital, the former teaching hospital of the Medical College of Virginia, he began his practice. For many years, he was professor of principles of surgery at the former University College of Medicine in Richmond and later at the Medical College of Virginia. He was a member of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the Medical Society of Virginia and the American Medical Society. He was a communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, a 32d-degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite.
