Rawls, who died at his home in Nansemond County Thursday after a short illness, were conducted yesterday at 2:30 p.m. at the I.O. Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. R.E. Brittle and the Rev. Earl T. Farrell. A quartet composed of Mrs. Grady Brown, Miss Nancy Brinkley, Paul Parker and Mr. Brittle, accompanied by Mrs. Webb Pinner, sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and "Rock of Ages." Mr. Brittle read "The House by the Side of the Road," and "Crossing the Bar." The pall was of red roses, white chrysanthemums and white carnations. Pallbearers were J.P. Parker, L.C. Babb, Herbert Babb, Presley Duke, L.L. Babb, H.O. Byrd, J.W. Horton and Henry Brinkley. Burial was in Cypress Chapel Church Cemetery. A, 14th VA Infantry. His father-in-law, Dr. Daniel Gregory STERLING (1819 - 1907), was a Union veteran, having served as a surgeon in Co. G, 148th NY Infantry. After the war he was a Norfolk druggist. He is buried in Hampton National Cemetery.
