Funeral services will take place in Suffolk from the residence of his son, L.H. Rawls, in the Rawls Apartment, at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. Mr. Rawls is survived by five sons, J.F. Rawls, of Nashville, Tenn., W.B. Rawls, of Richmond, L.H. Rawls, of Suffolk, David A. Rawls and R.G. Rawls, of Norfolk; five daughters, Mrs. W.H. Sykes and Mrs. J.B. Taliferro, of Smithfield, Mrs. D.C. Lewis of Norfolk, Mrs. H.E. Baggart and Mrs. Elbert Sturgeon of Suffolk. Mr. Rawls was the last surviving member of the Tom Smith Camp of Confederate veterans. ****************************************************************************** FUNERAL OF VETERAN WILL BE HELD TODAY Suffolk, Dec. 4 - Last rites for David Nathaniel Rawls, last surviving member of Tom Smith Camp, United Confederate Veterans, of Suffolk, will be conducted tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock at the home of his son, L.H. Rawls, 318 Main Street, this city. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mr. Rawls, who was 84 years old, died yesterday morning at the home of another son, R.G. Rawls, 813 Colonial Avenue, Norfolk. He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Annie Cofer, of Isle of Wight County, and by nine children, J.F. Rawls, of Nashville, Tenn.; Mrs. W.H. Sykes and Mrs. J.B. Taliaferro, of Smithfield; David A. and R.G. Rawls and Mrs. D.C. Lewis, of Norfolk, and L.H. Rawls and Mrs. Elbert Sturgeon, of Suffolk. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Emmett Sykes, of Ivor, and Mrs. John Buoy, of California. Mr. Rawls enlisted in the Confederate Army from Southampton County in 1863, being assigned to the heavy artillery of the Twenty-fourth Battalion, Early Brigade, and was stationed at Chaffin's Bluff, below Richmond, serving until the close of the war. He took part in the Battle of the Wilderness. A brother, John Rawls, who also enlisted in the Confederate forces, lost his life. ****************************************************************************** Funeral Rites For Confederate Veteran The funeral services for David Nathaniel Rawls were conducted Tuesday morning at the residence of his son, L.H. Rawls, in North Main street, by the Rev. H.P. Clark, assisted by the Revs. [H.S.] Hardcastle and L.F. Paulette. Active pallbearers were his sons and sons-in-laws, J.F. Rawls, D.A. Rawls, L.H. Rawls, W.H. Sykes, J.B. Taliaferro, D.C. Lewis, and H.E. Sturgeon. Interment was made in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Apr 1846, but age 53; Farmer; Owns Mortgaged Farm #59 {corrected from 57}; m. 24 years; 11 of 12 children surviving. He applied for a pension 23 Jun 1922 in Suffolk, giving his age as 76.
