RAWLES SR., SUFFOLK LEADER, SUCCUMBS AT 86 SUFFOLK - (AP) - Emmett Hiram Rawles Sr., 86, industrialist and civic leader, died Monday. He retired in 1948 from Holland & Lee Peanut Co., where he had served as treasurer, general manager and president. After retirement from the peanut firm, Rawles opened a real estate brokerage office and remained active until his death. He was a member of Suffolk City Council for two terms starting in 1935. He was treasurer of Suffolk Christian Church for 40 years. Survivors include a son, Emmett H. Rawles, Jr. of Suffolk; a sister and four brothers. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Suffolk Christian Church, with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** EMMETT RAWLES, 86, SUCCUMBS Emmett Hiram Rawles, 86, of 119 Brewer Avenue, the widower of Katherine Harrell Rawles, died in a Suffolk hospital Monday at 1:50 p.m. He was long active as an industrialist, civic, church and political figure. A native of Nansemond County, he was the son of Julius T. Rawles and Mary Dixon Holland Rawles. He was employed by the Holland and Lee Peanut Company for 43 years, retiring in October, 1948, as president, treasurer and general manager. He was also president of Gates Supply Corp., Gates, N.C. and Holland Supply Company, Holland, and served as a director of the National Bank of Suffolk from 1944 until its merger with Virginia National Bank, on whose Suffolk Board he continued to serve until his death. After his retirement from Holland and Lee Company in 1948, he opened a real estate brokerage office and continued in this profession until the time of his death. Mr. Rawles became an active member of the Suffolk Christian Church in 1910, and served as treasurer of the church for 40 years, and also on its Board of Deacons for 19 years. He was a member of the Baraca Sunday School Class. He was elected to the Suffolk City Council in 1935 and served two terms. He was also active in Suffolk - Nansemond Chamber of Commerce activities, was first elected to the Board in 1930, and served as treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce for some time. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Birdsong Trust Fund. He was an active member of the Masonic Order from 1918, and was voted an honorary life membership in the Mt. Nebo Royal Arch Chapter Number Twenty in 1961, and was also active in and a member of Suffolk Elks Lodge No. 685, serving that organization as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Rawles was also a member of the Nathaniel Bacon Chapter of Sons of American Revolution. He is survived by a son, Emmett H. Rawles, Jr. of Suffolk; a sister, Mrs. Mary Edith Jones of Holland; and four brothers, Ernest L. Rawles, Julius D. Rawles and Sumner Rawles, all of Holland, and Henry A. Rawles of Suffolk. The body will be taken from I.O. Hill Funeral Home to Suffolk Christian Church Wednesday at 10 a.m. for a funeral service at 11 a.m. conducted by Dr. Robert B. Marr. Burial services will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Emmett H. Rawles Jr., 813 Dumville Avenue, Suffolk.
