Rawles [sic; Rawls], one of the oldest citizens in Suffolk, died last night at his home on Holliday street. Deceased had been falling in health for about a year, but the illness which terminated in death began six weeks ago. Mr. Rawles had been jailer and also deputy sheriff and possessed a wide acquaintance. He leaves two sons - F.O. Rawles, a merchant, in East Washington street, and Benjamin Rawles, a conductor on the Suffolk and Carolina railroad. The funeral took place at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon from his late residence, Rev. D.B. Austin, pastor of the Beech Street M.E. Church, officiating. The interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The following gentlemen acted an pallbearers: S.A. Baker, James Price, W.W. Ballard, Virginius Kilby, L.W. Whitehead, and E.K. Channell. The deceased was sixty-eight years of age. Francis H. The Nansemond Co. D.Reg. (1896 #27) gives F.H. RAWLES, d. 20 Aug 1896. He served as a second lieutenant in Arnold's Co., 59th VA Militia. We previously had him listed as a veteran of the 9th VA Infantry, but he is not mentioned in the regimental history.
