The above photograph shows some of the hundreds who attended the funeral of Dr. Rawls in Suffolk, Sunday, October 16th. An almost duplication of the above scene took place in Smithfield, Sunday, October 23rd at the funeral of Joseph B. Jones, prominent Odd Fellow and forme postmaster. MANY ATTEND RITES FOR DR. J. E. RAWLS Hundreds of friends, neighbors and out of town associates attended the funeral of Dr. J.E. Rawls, widely known and beloved surgeon and civic leader last Sunday at the Suffolk Christian Church. The services were conducted by Rev. John G. Truitt, pastor, assisted by the Rev. H.S. Hardcastle of Norfolk Christian Temple; Rev. N.G. Newman of Nansemond county, R.P. Downey of West End Baptist Church, and Dr. L.E. Smith, president of Elon College. The Christian Church Choir sang "Ten Thousand Times Ten Thousand", "Oh Love That Will Not Let Me Go" and "For the Saints". Hundreds of beautiful Floral designs were sent by relatives and friends from Suffolk, Tidewater and distant points. Active pallbearers were: Dr. D.L. Harrell, Dr. J.R. Ellison, Dr. William H. Chapman, Dr. J. Lewis Rawls, Dr. O.R. Yates, Dr. Raleigh Parker, Dr. G. Richard Joyner, Dr. C.H. Dawson, Dr. J.B. Newman, Jr., and Dr. J. Parker Cross. Dr. Japeth Edward RAWLS, Sr., of Suffolk, surgeon, b. 15 Feb 1875, Nansemond Co., d. 14 Oct 1936, Suffolk, interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery (Block M, Lot 1*), Suffolk, 16 Oct 1936, "The Smithfield (VA) Times," Thurs., Oct. 27, 1938, p. 2, col. 4-6 *Cedar Hill list, an extension of the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/cemeteries/cedar_p.txt Birthdate &c. from D.Cert. 22712 (Suffolk #269), which states his auto overturned on Hwy. 460, causing extensive injuries. His parents, Luther & Mary Elizabeth (DARDEN) RAWLS, are buried in Holy Neck Christian Church Cemetery.
