Rawls, Former Supervisor, Dead at 64 James Ellis Rawls, 64, of Holland, a former member of the Nansemond County Board of Supervisors, died at 9 a.m. today at Louise Memorial Hospital. The son of the late John Anthony Rawls and Mrs. Caledonia [sic; Caldonia] Ellis Rawls of White [Sulphur] Spring, Fla., he is survived by his widow, Mrs. James Ellis Rawls of Holland, one daughter, Mrs. Juanita Rawls Watterson of Richmond, and one sister, Mrs. N.S. Boykins of Norfolk. A prominent farmer, he was a member of the advisory board of the Holland branch of Seaboard Citizens National Bank, a member of the Holland Ruritan Club and of South Quay Baptist Church. He served on the Board of Supervisors for 16 years, retiring in Dec. 1959. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at the R.W. Baker Funeral Home by the Rev. L.F. Smith, pastor of South Quay Baptist Church, and the Rev. Robert B. Marr of the Suffolk Christian Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** JAMES E. Bruce Johnson. ****************************************************************************** JAMES ELLIS RAWLS HOLLAND - A funeral service for James Ellis Rawls was conducted Thursday, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. Baker Funeral Home, Suffolk, by the Rev. L.F. Smith of South Quay Baptist Church and the Rev. Robert B. Marr of Suffolk Christian Church. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. Pallbearers were Charles R. Rawls, 64, longtime member of the Nansemond County Board of Supervisors, died Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Obici Memorial Hospital. Rawls, a farmer of Route 1, Holland, retired from the Board of Supervisors in 1959 after 16 years' service. Later he was appointed official tiebreaker for the supervisors but was called on to use his vote only once in electing Jarvis L. Howell board chairman over A.L. Glasscock early in 1964. A native of White [Sulphur] Springs, Fla., he was a son of John Anthony and Mrs. Caledonia [sic; Caldonia] Ellis Rawls. He was a member of South Quay Baptist Church, Holland Ruritan Club, and the advisory board to Holland branch of Seaboard Citizens National Bank. He is survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Juanita R. Waterson of Richmond; and a sister, Mrs. N.S. Boykin of Norfolk.
