RAWLES DIES AT AGE OF 79, WAS ILL 4 WEEKS Long Prominent in Community, Widow and Eight Children Survive Julius T. Rawles, 79, prominent resident of Holland, Va., died at a local hospital at 9 o'clock this morning. He was the son of the late Henry A. and Edith Duke Rawles and was a lifelong resident of Nansemend county. He had been ill for the last four weeks. Mr. Rawles is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ava Rodgers Rawles, his first wife, Mrs. Mary Dixon Holland Rawles, having died a few years ago. He is also survived by one daughter, Mrs. J.T. Jones, of Holland, and seven sons, I.L. Rawles, of Portsmouth, Henry, Richard, and Emmett Rawles, of Suffolk, Julius D., Ernest L. and Sumner Rawles of Holland. Mr. Rawles was a deacon in the Holland Christian church, having been an active worker for many years, a charter member of the Holland Ruritan club, and had served as mayor of the town of Holland for a number of years. He also was treasurer of the Woodmen of the World. In 1910 Mr. Rawles organised the Holland Supply Company, serving as secretary-treasurer and general manager of the company until his death. He had a wide circle of friends throughout Nansemond county and the surrounding community where he took an active interest in civic affairs up until the time of his death. Mr. Rawles remained active until his last illness four weeks ago. Funeral arrangements had not been completed this morning but it was announced that the services would be held at Holland Christian church, Friday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. ****************************************************************************** JULIUS RAWLES DIES IN HOLLAND FUNERAL SERVICES FOR PROMINENT CITIZEN SET FOR FRIDAY AT 3:30. Suffolk, Aug.3 - (AP) - Julius T. Rawles, 79, prominent citizen of Holland and widely known and connected throughout the county and in Suffolk, died this morning at Lakeview Hospital, after a months’ illness. Mr. Rawles was the son of Henry A. and Edith Duke Rawles and was born in Nansemond County, near Holland. In early manhood he was married to Mrs. Mary Dixon Rawles, who preceded him to the grave. Of this marriage the following children survive: I.L. Rawles, of Portsmouth; Henry Richard and Emmett H. Rawles, of Suffolk; Sumner, Julius D., and Ernest Rawles, of Holland, and Mrs. J.T. Jones, of Holland. He was married in recent years to Mrs. Ava Rodgers, who survives him. He also leaves 11 grandchildren. Mr. Rawles was secretary and treasurer of the Holland Supply Company, which was organized in 1909, and was also engaged in farming operations. He was an active member and deacon in the Holland Christian Church and a charter member of the Holland Ruritan Club. Mr. Rawles was a director and one of the original stockholders of the Farmers Bank of Holland. He served as mayor of Holland for a number of years and was interested in the social, civil and church life of his community. The body was taken to the home in Holland, and funeral services will be conducted Friday at Holland Christian Church, at 3:30 p.m. by Dr. N.G. Newman, Dr. John G. Truitt, The Rev. Arnold Slater and the Rev. W.H. Corbitt. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. Active pallbearers will be J.C. Council, of Norfolk; J.D. MacClenny, Harvard Birdsong and Rawles Woodward, of Suffolk; Dr. Gilmer Holland, J.J. Holland, John F. Duke and Vernon E. Rawles, of the county. Honorary pallbearers will consist of the deacons of Holy Neck and Holland Christian churches, directors of the Farmers’ Bank of Holland, friends and neighbors. He would have been discharged in early 1862 as overage. His son Ernest's Delayed B.Cert. '54 #2666 gives his father as Julius Telemicus.
