HALL SHEPHERD The death of Mrs. Carrie Shepherd, wife of Mr. John M. Shepherd, agent of the Southern Express Company in Suffolk, occurred Monday evening at 8 o’clock, at her home, on Hall Avenue, age 80 years. She had been in declining health for several months but not until about a week ago was her condition considered precarious. Every possible means was employed for her restoration and the most tender nursing used to alleviate her sufferings, but the summons had come and life the beloved Paul of old she could say, "I am now ready to be offered up, the time of my departure is at hand." Mrs. Shepherd was of a most genial temperament, and had a large circle of devoted friends. She was prominently identified with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she held her membership, and was ever ready and willing to engage in any laudable undertaking for the up building of her church and the glory of her blessed Redeemer’s name. In her death the church loses one of its most valuable and consistent members, and her many acts of Christian charity and deeds of love and goodwill will be spoken of her as a memorial for long years to come. Not only was she interested in and devoted to the work of the church, but also she was among the leading members of the Daughters of the Confederacy and never tired in doing all she could to advance the work of the organization and to take an active part in all of its meetings. She was ever faithful to duty and performed well her part in every department of life’s work to which she was assigned. When the end came, it was peaceful, and as life ebbed slowly away a beautiful smile lit up her face, betokening a happy entrance into the joys of the Celestial City - the far away home of the soul. The deceased is survived by a fond and devoted husband, two daughters, Mrs. John Boothe, Oxford, N.C., and Mrs. F.C. Whaley, Shelmerdine, N.C.; two sons, James T. and Fred M. Shepherd, of Suffolk. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. G.S.P. Holland, of Suffolk, and a brother, Joseph W. Hall, of Isle of Wight county, and two grandchildren. All of these were at the bedside when summons came. The funeral was conducted from St. Paul’s Episcopal church, at 4:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, by the rector, Rev. Joseph B. Dunn. The funeral was largely attended and the floral offerings were many and beautiful. The body was interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Tom Smith Camp of Confederate Veterans, of which her husband is a member, acted as honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were Messrs. Henry Land, Dr. H.W. Campbell, Thomas Urquhart, Arthur Woolford, Charles Hutchins, Dr. J.P. Whedbee and A. Riddick. Caroline M. "Carrie" (HALL; Mrs. John M.)
