Scammell Dies In Her 90th Year Was Oldest Citizen, Save One, Of The City Of Suffolk Suffolk Oct 2. - Mrs. W.J. Scammell died this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Price on Hill street, in the ninetieth year of her age. Mrs. Scammell was the oldest citizen save one of this city. She was a Daughter of the Confederacy and was a native of Surry county. She is survived by one brother, J.G. Goodrich; five daughters, Mrs. George Brown, Mrs. Eva Harrison, Mrs. Mary Price, all of Suffolk; Mrs. Bettie Potts of Providence Forge; Mrs. Ernest Atkins of Comet; two sons, William Scammell of Richmond and Samuel Scammel of Arizona; two nephews, Willie Goodrich of Suffolk; Charles Goodrich of Surry county; one niece, Mrs. Carroll of Surry court house. The funeral services will be held at the residence of Mrs. Price on Hill street Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. G.T. Lumpkin and Dr. W.W. Staley. The interment will be made in Cedar Hill cemetery. ****************************************************************************** MRS. W. J. SCAMMELL Suffolk, Oct. 4. - The funeral of Mrs. W.J. Scammell, who died here at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Price, in the 90th year of her age, was held yesterday afternoon at the residence on Hill street, conducted by Dr. W.W. Staley and Rev. G.T. Lumpkin. The Baptist quartet sang and Joseph L. Little sang the solo, "Face to Face." The interment was made in Cedar Hill cemetery. The active pall-bearers were: W.S. Tebo, F.O Ford, W.N. McAnge, N.G. Norfleet, J.H. Mitchell, R.G. Allmond. Honorary: P.S. Piland, F.S. Skinner, George Boykin, Carl Metcalf, L.J. Costen, J.C. Ramsay. They are conflating her with William's first wife Sarah Bennett (RIGGINS) SCAMMELL, daughter of Samuel & Unity RIGGINS; Sarah & William m. 18 Apr 1858, in Surry Co. D.Cert. 25050 (Suffolk #262) gives b. 18 Sep 1828, daughter of William GOODRICH; the informant was Mrs. Frank M. PRICE - her step-daughter Mary. Rather, she was the daughter of Champion & Edney (ROGERS) GOODRICH, who m. 9 Nov 1833, in Surry Co. Bettie & William, both widowed, m. 18 Dec 1881, in Surry Co. He was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. D, 10th Battalion VA Heavy Artillery.
