All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM SCAMMELL Suffolk, Va., Nov 4 - William Scammell, a brave Confederate veteran, a native of Surry county, Va., died here last night at 8 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F.N. Price, on Central avenue, in the 82nd year of his age. He had been in failing health for some months, and is survived by his aged wife; five daughters, Mrs George Potts of Providence Forge; Mrs. Ernest Atkins of Comet, Va.; Mrs. Eva Harrison of Emporia, Va.; Mrs. George Brown and Mrs. F.N. [sic; F.M.] Price of Suffolk; two sons, William Scammell of Richmond and Sam Scammell of Rocky Mount, N.C. The funeral service will be held from the residence of Mrs. Price on Central avenue, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, by Rev. W.A. Hall of the Presbyterian church. The body will be interred in Cedar Hill cemetery. D.Cert. 26754 (Suffolk #62) gives b. 17 Jan 1830 The 1880 Census - Guilford Dist., Surry Co. - gives age 49. The 1900 Census - Bland Dist., Prince George Co. - gives b. Jan 1834. Find a Grave Memorial #247569059 gives his widow as Sarah Bennett (RIGGIN) SCAMMELL (1827 - 10/2/1917) {Oct 2025}. They are conflating her with his first wife Sarah Bennett (RIGGINS) SCAMMELL, daughter of Samuel & Unity RIGGINS; Sarah & William m. 18 Apr 1858, in Surry Co. Rather, his widow was Averilla Elizabeth "Bettie" (GOODRICH CROPPER) SCAMMELL.
