All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Burns Prove Fatal To County Citizen Eugene Ransom Smith, of Bethlehem community, died at 5:15 today at a local hospital as the result of severe burns sustained about six weeks ago while hiving bees near his home. He was a prominent Nansemond farmer and lifelong member of Bethlehem Christian Church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lucy Williams Smith; two daughters, Mrs. Eva S. Darden, of Nansemond County, and Mrs. Theo M. Powell, of Norfolk County; one son, Sylvester J. Smith, of Suffolk; five grandchildren and three great- grandchildren; two brothers, J.T. Smith, of Nansemond County, and A.L. Smith, of Newport News; several nephews and nieces. The body was removed to the I.O. Hill and Company Funeral Home on West Washington Street, where it will remain until 3 p.m., Sunday at which time the procession will leave for Bethlehem Church where services will be conducted by the Rev. R.E. Brittle, Dr. I.W. Johnson and Dr. H.J. Goodwin. Interment will be in the church cemetery. ****************************************************************************** EUGENE RANSOME SMITH FUNERAL RITES HELD AT BETHLEHEM Funeral services for Eugene Ransome Smith were conducted at Bethlehem Christian Church at 3:30 p.m., yesterday by the Rev. R.E. Brittle, Dr. H.J. Goodwin and Dr. I.W. Johnson. During the service the church choir, accompanied by Mrs. Harry Schadel, sang "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder," "Going Down the Valley," and "God Will Take Care of You." Rev. Brittle sang, "Sunrise Tomorrow." The casket was covered with a pall of white iris, carnations and blue delphiniums. Active pallbearers included E.C. Luke, Horace Copeland, Clayton Joyner, Curtis B. Smith, Courtney Smith, Pvt. S.J. Smith, D.C. Butler and Smith Joyner, nephews of the deceased. Honorary pallbearers included the deacons of the Bethlehem Church, the Taylor Progressive Bible Class and friends. Interment was made in the church cemetery. His widow (1877 - 1961) is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk.
