Smith Buried in Holland Funeral services for William Joseph Smith, 82, who died Saturday night at his home near Holy Neck in Nansemond County after a long illness, were to be conducted this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Holy Neck Christian Church by the Rev. H.E. Crutchfield. Mr. Smith, who was a member of the Holy Neck Christian Church and its Board of Deacons, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Taylor Smith; five daughters, Miss Ida L. Smith, Mrs. J.W. Hamilton and Mrs. R.R. Piland of near Holland, Mrs. Eddie Cheverie of Newton, Mass, aud Mrs. R.C. Fussell of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Wilbur J. Smith of the Veteran's Hospital, Roanoke and 12 grandchildren. The body was taken to the Hill Funeral Home where it is to remain until 2:15 this afternoon, at which time the funeral procession will leave for the Holy Neck Christian Church. Burial will be in the Holland Cemetery. His parents, John W. SMITH & Drucilla Margaret GREEN, m. 28 Nov 1848 in Gates Co., NC. They are buried in a SMITH family cemetery, Roducco, Gates Co., NC. His father was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. H, 5th NC Infantry. He was captured 28 Nov 1863 at Mine Run, was held as a POW in the Old Capitol Prison, DC, & Point Lookout, MD, and was exchanged 24 Feb 1865. Joe's D.Cert. 14118 (Holy Neck #13) gives son of John & Gricilla SMITH, both b. Princess Anne Co., VA.
