SMITH, JR., DIES TODAY AFTER FEW DAYS' ILLNESS Death of Wife of Former Mayor of Suffolk Proves Shock Mrs. LeClaire King Smith, wife of former Mayor Otis S. Smith, Jr., died at her home, 13 Brewer avenue, this morning at 4:30 o'clock of double pneumonia. Mrs. Smith had been ill since Christmas, when she developed a severe cold. Funeral services will be held at the residence Thursday at 3 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Dr. John G. Truitt, pastor of Suffolk Christian church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill cemetery. Surviving Mrs. Smith, in addition to her husband, are a son, Spottswood, 3rd; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Moseley and Miss Inez King, all of Suffolk; two uncles, Dr. C.J. Riddick, of Suffolk, and Claude King of Nansemond county; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Woodville King, former treasurer of the city of Suffolk. Interested in the family firm, Ballard and Smith, Mrs. Smith devoted her time largely to business and headed the ready-to-wear department of the store. She also took an active part in social affairs for many years prior to entering business. ****************************************************************************** MRS. LeCLAIRE KING SMITH Suffolk, Dec. 31, Mrs. LeClaire King Smith, prominent young matron of this city, and wife of Otis S. Smith, Jr., former Mayor of Suffolk, died this morning at 4:30 at her home on Brewer Avenue, after a brief illness, of pneumonia. Mrs. Smith, who was a member of the firm of Ballard & Smith, was taken ill on Christmas day and grew rapidly worse until her death this morning. Her personal beauty and her charm of manner made for her a wide circle of friends and her entrance into the business life of the community a few years ago, widened her large number of friendship. Surviving are her husband, one son, Spottswood Smith; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Finch Moseley, and Miss Inez King; two nieces, Misses Anne and LeClaire Holton, and four nephews, Woodville, Robert, Jack and Kendall Holton. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Woodville A. King. She was a member of the Suffolk Christian Church and of the American Legion Auxiliary. LeClaire (KING; Mrs. Otis S.
