According to reports from Virginia Hospital, Smith entered the hospital last Monday for treatment of a severe case of hiccups. A hospital staff member stated that "almost everything in the book" was tried before the hiccups were retarded and Smith was released a few days later. Dr. William N. Eddy, the attending physician, stated that in addition to medical methods applied in an attempt to arrest the condition, old-fashioned remedies such as breathing into a paper bag, stopping the ears while taking nine sips of water, among others, were tried. Medications intended to relax the patient and tight binding of the torso were more professional methods used. Which method suceeded in halting the hiccups is not positively known, but on Wednesday Smith was released returned to his job at the local dairy. He was reported to be getting along all right when he was taken with the hiccups again. It was while he was headed back to Suffolk and the hospital that the heart attack struck him from which he died while being brought here by friends for treatment. A member of the hospital staff said Smith was reported to have suffered a siege of hiccups lasting six weeks while in residence at Rich Square, N.C., last year. Funeral services for Smith will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Baker Funeral Home. Captain Kenneth Johnson of the Salvation Army will conduct the services and interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Besides his wife, Mrs. Beulah Harrell Smith, he is survived by two sons, Millard Smith, Jr., and Billy Gene Smith, both of Nansemond County; two grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Artis Lupton and Mrs. Eddie Felton of Portsmouth, Mrs. Carrie Bracy of Roxville, N.C., and Mrs. Iris Hoenacker of Berwind, West Virginia; a brother, Bela Smith of Kelford, N.C.
