OTIS SPOTSWOOD SMITH SUDDEN DEATHS [...] HUNDREDS AT FUNERAL OF CAPT. OTIS S. SMITH, JR. Suffolk, - Jan. 31 - Hundreds of people today attended the funeral services for Capt. Otis S. Smith, Jr., member of the firm of Ballard & Smith, World War Veteran, and former mayor of Suffolk. Services were conducted at the funeral home of I.O. Hill & Company by Dr. John G. Truitt, pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church in which Captain Smith held membership and was an active worker. During the services, Dr. Truitt read the hymns, "Lord As to Thy Dear Cross I Cling", and "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy". Capt. Otis Spotswood SMITH, Jr., merchant, former Mayor of Suffolk, WW-I veteran, b. 17 Jul 1892, Suffolk, suicide 29 Jan 1938, Suffolk, interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery (Block C, Lot 98*), Suffolk, 31 Jan 1938, "The Smithfield (VA) Times," Vol. 18, No. 46, Feb. 3, 1938, p. 1, col. 3 Additional information: *His parents are buried in Block C, Lot 10. Otis S. Smith, Jr., prominent Suffolk citizen, who was found dead in his hotel room today from a bullet wound said to have been self-inflicted.
