DIANA OPHELIA SAUNDERS PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT AT THE HOME OF HER DAUGHTER, MRS. GEORGE TABB, IN PORTSMOUTH - AN EXCELLENT SPIRIT GONE TO ITS REWARD Last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Tabb in Portsmouth, Mrs. Diana Ophelia Saunders, on of the most prominent women of Nansemond County, died in the 86th year of her age. Mrs. Saunders, who was born on the 14th April 1831, was the daughter Hamlin Eppes, who was treasurer and sheriff of the county, a leader in the political and social life of the county in his day. She was married in 1847 to Major James R. Saunders, who died seventeen years ago. She is survived by three sons, Leroy E. of Pittsburg, Pa., Hamlin E. of Savannah, Ga., and Paul E., of Archer, Florida; two daughters, Mrs. Hersey Woodward, of Suffolk, and Mrs. George Tabb, of Portsmouth; nineteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She has been for sixty-five years a member of Cypress Chapel Christian Church. Mrs. Saunders, though old in years was young in spirit, and entered into the affairs of everyday life, and questions of the day, with the enthusiasm of a young woman. Her children and grand-children found in her a charming companion and faithful friend and counselor. All of her life has been associated with the life of the town and county, with whose history she was thoroughly conversant. A member of her family sho her well said, "I never thought of her as being old, or as near death, she was always so bright and cheery." The body will be brought to Suffolk Saturday morning at 10 o’clock over the Seaboard Air line, and the funeral will conducted from the Christian Church at 10:30 A.M. by Dr. W.W. Staley. The body will be taken to the family cemetery on the old home place in the county for interment. ******************************************************************************** MRS. DIANA O. SAUNDERS Mrs. Diana O. Saunders, widow of James R. Saunders died last night at 8:45 o'clock at the home of her son-in-law, George A. Tabb, No. 1021 Holladay Street, after an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Saunders was 79 years of age. She was a resident of Suffolk and was in Portsmouth visiting her daughter, Mrs. Tabb. She was taken ill tow weeks ago. Besides Mrs. Tabb, the deceased is survived by the following children: Leroy E. Saunders of Alleghany City,Pa; Hamlin E. Saunders of Savannah, GA.; and Paul E.
