Saunders Dies in County Mrs. Maggie Amelia [sic; Arline] Saunders, widow of Hobday Lee Saunders, died today at the home of her son H.L. Saunders, Nansemond County, after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Thomas F. and Martha Holland, of Nansemond County. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Hurley P. Roberts, Windsor, and Mrs. Beverly S. Davenport, Newport News; five sons, Irvin C. Wilkins, Hilton Village; Delmas H. Saunders, Baltimore, Md.; Richard Lee Saunders, Trujillo, Haiti, and Thomas W. and H.L. Saunders, of Windsor; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the Hill Funeral Home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday by Rev. R.E. Brittle and Rev. W.T. Ratchford. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. D.Cert. 22422 (Chuckatuck #2) also gives Maggie Amelia. Her parents are buried in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery, as are her first husband, Irvin C. WILKINS (1868 - 1898), & his parents. Her sons Thomas W. and Hobday L. SAUNDERS, Jr., owned & operated White Oaks Tavern on US 460 near the Isle of Wight Co. line. Thomas shot & killed Clarence Hardy RHODES there 2 Nov 1946. He was tried & acquitted the following June.
